Topical Heartworm Treatment For Dogs

What is heartworm disease?

Heartworm disease is a common but preventable disease for dogs. The parasite got its name because the adult worm prefers to live inside or adjacent to the heart. There are some special cases wherein the worm can also be found in the lungs.

Physically, these worms look like very tiny angel hair pasta strands that can reach up to about a foot in length. Both male and female worms look similar to the naked eye.

The disease is caused by the parasite Dirofilaria immitis and is carried from one dog to another through the bite of an infected mosquito. Once the carrier mosquito feeds on the dog, it transfers the heartworm microfilariae into the dog. These microfilariae migrate, mature, and multiply in the dog’s heart.

If the infection is left untreated, it can lead to numerous complications. It can cause a vast array of problems such as the ones listed below:

  • Coughing (similar to hacking sound)
  • Dyspnea or difficulty in breathing
  • Heavy and excessive panting
  • Inappetence
  • Weight loss / emaciation
  • Exercise intolerance
  • Cardiomyopathies or heart problems
  • Abnormal fluid retention/ edema
  • Kidney failure
  • Liver failure

The parasite is known to be active during the early morning or late in the evening. These are also the common times when symptoms of coughing or hacking can be observed in dogs infected with heartworm.
